Charlotte, NC
The CLEANcarolinas leadership team, Dr. Saffeer Khan and Carolyn Keith joined John Larson, Dominion Energy's Director of Public Policy and Economic Development, and other regional offshore wind professionals for an exciting tour of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project (CVOW), located approximately 42 miles off Virginia Beach. Dominion's two test turbines, completed in 2020, are 620 feet in height, with an additional 174 turbines to be placed by 2026, at approximately 820 feet in height. When completed, the project will produce 2.6 gigawatts of power, which will be enough energy to power 660,000 homes - equivalent to 25% of the homes in Virginia. Currently within budget, the estimated cost of the project is $9.8 billion dollars. The CVOW project will contribute significantly to meeting Virginia's clean energy goals and will create hundreds of new clean energy jobs. Thanks to the Chambers for Innovation and Clean Energy and the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association for organizing the visit and for the outstanding photos by Floyd B. McKissick.
