02.21.24
Fayetteville, NC
On February 21st, Drs. Mike Mazzola, Saffeer Khan and Carolyn Keith met with the team led by Dr. Trung Tran at CLEANcarolinas partner Fayetteville State University. Dr. Tran is using the geographic information system (GIS) data to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of the upward social mobility in rural areas of the Carolinas. The project findings will help CLEANcarolinas team to explore and assess the impact of clean energy technologies on the upward social mobility in under-represented and under-resourced rural communities. The FSU team is employing geospatial data analytics on the secondary data including US Census, American Community Survey (ACS), and land use/cover data to understand social mobility at the regional scale. Through partnerships with North Carolina Rural Center, Mid-Carolina Regional Council, Fort Liberty School System, Lumber River Council of Governments, and the Eastern Carolina Council of Governments, the FSU team is also administering online and paper-based surveys to families in rural communities to discover social mobility at household scale. The project outcomes will help CLEANcarolinas ecosystem to demonstrate meaningful focus on improving critically important aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) through clean energy innovation based regional economic and workforce development.
