Established in 1867, Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a distinguished public historically black university situated in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The university offers a wide array of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs through its colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, and Health, Science, and Technology, and is renowned for its dedication to providing accessible higher education to a diverse student body, including first-generation and military-affiliated students. FSU's campus features a blend of historic and modern architecture, creating a vibrant academic environment supported by numerous student organizations, athletics programs, and cultural events. These initiatives contribute significantly to the economic and cultural development of the region while upholding a strong commitment to academic excellence and community engagement. As a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina System and the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state, FSU remains deeply committed to its historical roots. With a student population of nearly 7,000, FSU stands out as one of the most diverse institutions in the nation.
The FSU's proposal in the CLEANcarolinas project aims to study the spatial and temporal patterns of upward social mobility in rural areas of the region. This research will support efforts to explore and assess the impact of clean energy technologies on social mobility, especially in under-represented and under-resourced communities. The FSU team uses geospatial data analytics on secondary data sources such as the US Census, American Community Survey (ACS), and land use/cover data to understand social mobility at a regional scale. They also partner with organizations like the North Carolina Rural Center, Mid-Carolina Regional Council, Fort Liberty School System, Lumber River Council of Governments, Eastern Carolina Council of Governments, and other COGs to conduct surveys with families in rural communities, gaining insights into social mobility at a household scale. The project outcomes will support the CLEANcarolinas ecosystem in prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) through clean energy innovation-based regional economic and workforce development.
